WORDS FROM THE OWNER

My name is Carsten Kümler. I am the owner of Kümler Handcrafted. I call myself a craftsman, and the business is located in Denmark.
I started my career in the advertising industry in 1984. That was before mobile phones, the internet, and Desktop Publishing. Back then, we made everything by hand.
The advertising industry has been good to me for many years, but as IT gradually took over the craft, the keyboard became my tool – naturally alongside careful thought and good sense.
But I constantly missed working with my hands. The creative drive felt different and less analogue. Therefore, I had various “balancing activities” running alongside my communication work. And it was mostly handiwork.
This included leatherwork and knife-making.
The Leather Craft
I am a passionate and detail-oriented craftsman in everything I do, and my interest in leatherwork began in 2009 when I started building bespoke hunting knives for friends and family. The craftsmanship – including the leatherwork – was a part of the process, and it ignited a fire in me for perfection, details, and sustainability.
I spent many of the following years honing my skills in collaboration with some of the best craftsmen in Europe, and it has gradually grown from there.
Back to Working with My Hands
On the whole, I have always enjoyed performing and optimizing work with my hands. Many skilled craftsmen in my network have taught me techniques for extending the lifespan of older items, such as family heirlooms that the owner wishes to keep in functional condition. These tasks are highly rewarding because they truly matter. Whether it is bags, trophies, shoes, or knives.
Therefore, my mindset is also that when you choose to invest in new, high-end goods, you are not just buying them for yourself. You are buying them for your children and grandchildren. Because they last. And the conversations I have with customers who share this mindset are fantastic. We create timeless products that often remain in the family’s possession. And it is the work of the human hand. Not IT or AI – it is completely analogue and solid. That is just my style!
The Prices
I know that I am up against bulk goods from Asia, where you can buy “leather” items for very little money. And some of them are certainly viable in terms of functionality. But I do not want to compete with them. My customers want unique products that are custom-made for themselves or their loved ones, where they have been part of the process – and they want someone to turn to with questions regarding their leather or knives. With me, the products are a COLLABORATION.
The Website
This website is meant as inspiration. What you see are examples of work produced and delivered to happy customers. I am always ready for a chat about a project.
If I happen to have items that – for one reason or another – are not custom-made, you might find something under the section “Ready for Sale”.

VALUES
Having the opportunity to extend the legacy of an animal by using its hide in products that can last for generations, if well cared for, is highly motivating. It is our way of showing the individual animal the respect it deserves. For example, I revitalize bags that are in their 3rd generation of ownership. That is deeply satisfying.
Materials for Knife Building
Similar values apply to the selection of materials for the knives I build. Here, I only use approved wood types and tooth/bone materials that are not featured on lists like CITES’ over endangered flora and fauna species.
Integrity & Fairness
Managing expectations and clear communication saves us from surprises.
Respect
PASSION IS THE DRIVING FORCE
I have always been detail-oriented. I asked a good friend several years ago: “What do you think I will be doing during the last 20 years of my working life?” He replied: “Something where you can sit and fine-tune small details until they are perfect.”
And he was right!
My passion is to do my work properly – down to the smallest detail. It takes a little longer, but the satisfaction follows. I am now doing something I look forward to waking up to in the morning. I work with my hands. I am TOTALLY independent of AI, which has no hands and cannot polish leather, silver, or gold.
I easily treat myself to a few minutes just sitting and looking at a finished task, enjoying the – often – very long process that has ended in a satisfying result. The scent of the leather, the clean burnished edges, the perfect file-work on the liners of an exclusive, well-proportioned hunting knife with a perfect combination of materials – or simply the overall result of the project. It makes me SO happy!
And that is the goal. I spoke with my youngest son about happiness. Happiness is a sporadic, exhilarating feeling that comes spontaneously in specific situations.
We agreed that “being SATISFIED” is much more achievable and manageable. It requires working with the balances in your life, but once you have achieved satisfaction around a task or a relationship, it lasts forever.
It feeds the motivation – and the passion!
